Lead DevOps Engineer
About the role
Lead DevOps Engineer (Remote) Overview Some of the world’s most innovative global software and technology companies struggle to find engineering partners capable of stepping into complex environments and immediately driving meaningful outcomes. These teams need more than additional hands—they need senior engineers who can quickly understand an environment, identify the path forward, and execute without constant direction. Enter EverOps – the premier Embedded Service Provider. We partner directly with customer engineering teams to assess and address mission-critical infrastructure, cloud, security, and delivery challenges. The Challenge EverOps is looking for a Lead DevOps Engineer with deep AWS infrastructure experience, exceptional cloud networking expertise, and a proven ability to establish and scale mature infrastructure engineering practices. This role will be responsible for helping build and lead the engineering capability supporting customer deployments across new and existing AWS environments. You'll establish the infrastructure foundations, security standards, deployment patterns, and operational practices necessary to deliver reliable, repeatable, and scalable customer infrastructure. You'll operate within a business-critical environment where ensuring operational stability, strengthening security practices, reducing technical debt, and establishing scalable engineering standards are essential. The infrastructure spans AWS, networking, application platforms, databases, and production operations, requiring someone who can evaluate the broader technical landscape and identify practical opportunities for improvement. Success requires more than hands-on technical expertise. You'll need to evaluate existing engineering practices, establish standards, mentor engineers, and build processes that enable a growing team to operate effectively while maintaining high standards for security, reliability, and operational excellence. This role requires someone who can quickly assess unfamiliar environments, work through ambiguity, and independently translate business and technical objectives into actionable engineering deliverables. The Mission As a Lead DevOps Engineer, you will join our U.S.-Based Virtual Operating Center and embed directly with a customer engineering team. Your primary focus will be building and maturing the infrastructure engineering capability responsible for supporting customer deployments across AWS environments. You'll provide hands-on technical leadership in designing, provisioning, securing, and operating cloud infrastructure while establishing the processes, standards, and engineering practices needed to scale delivery. You'll work closely with application engineers, security teams, networking teams, and customer stakeholders to ensure infrastructure is deployment-ready, operationally supportable, and aligned with AWS architectural and security best practices. Your responsibilities will include multi-account AWS architecture, cloud networking, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, security hardening, disaster recovery, and production readiness. You'll also support ongoing infrastructure migrations and modernization efforts, ensuring changes are implemented safely and aligned with established engineering standards. As the engineering function grows, you'll help establish team responsibilities, technical standards, delivery processes, and operational expectations while mentoring engineers and driving continuous improvement. This is a highly autonomous, hands-on technical leadership role. You'll be expected to identify what needs improvement, prioritize work based on operational risk and business impact, define actionable technical deliverables, and drive initiatives through completion without requiring step-by-step direction. What You'll Do
- Team Development: Help build and develop an infrastructure engineering team, establishing technical expectations, mentoring engineers, and creating repeatable processes that support consistent, high-quality delivery.
- AWS Account Architecture: Design, provision, and maintain secure, scalable AWS account structures, landing zones, networking foundations, access controls, and infrastructure provisioning workflows.
- Deployment Enablement: Partner with application and customer engineering teams to provision, configure, and maintain infrastructure supporting customer deployments across new and existing AWS accounts.
- Infrastructure Standardization: Develop reusable Terraform modules, infrastructure templates, deployment patterns, and engineering standards that improve consistency, security, and delivery efficiency.
- Operational Maturity: Assess existing DevOps practices, infrastructure management, operational procedures, and engineering workflows to identify gaps, reduce technical debt, and implement practical improvements aligned with industry best practices.
- Cloud Security: Evaluate and improve cloud security posture through infrastructure hardening, least-privilege access, IAM best practices, network segmentation, secrets management, vulnerability remediation, and secure infrastructure configurations.
- Cloud Migration: Provide hands-on engineering support for the migration and modernization of production workloads from legacy hosted infrastructure into AWS.
- Network Engineering: Diagnose and resolve complex connectivity, routing, DNS, firewall, VPN, load-balancing, security-group, and hybrid-networking issues impacting customer deployments, infrastructure migrations, and production systems.
- Migration Planning: Assess undocumented or partially documented environments, identify dependencies and blockers, and translate findings into practical migration plans and technical workstreams.
- AWS Infrastructure: Design, build, troubleshoot, secure, and improve production AWS environments using modern infrastructure-as-code practices and established architectural standards.
- Legacy Modernization: Identify and remediate risks associated with legacy infrastructure and operating systems, supporting migrations to modern, secure, and maintainable platforms.
- Platform Engineering: Implement and improve CI/CD, monitoring, observability, secrets management, configuration management, and deployment automation.
- Disaster Recovery: Design and implement AWS-based disaster recovery capabilities, including infrastructure, replication dependencies, recovery procedures, and operational runbooks.
- Operational Readiness: Establish and maintain standards for infrastructure monitoring, deployment validation, change management, incident response, production support, and ongoing operational reliability.
- Production Cutovers: Support migration rehearsals, rollback planning, production cutovers, validation, and post-migration stabilization.
- Technical Ownership: Independently define and execute technical deliverables, surface risks early, and drive issues to resolution.
